Day 7 - Biggs, Shaniko, Deschutes River, the high plains

The Dinty's Motel in Biggs has a sod roof, complete with tiny wind turbines, used to power their A/C and HDTVs. A giant leap forward for green energy.

ok, ok, this is the last picture of Hawaiian Shave Ice I'll make on this trip.

The little station that couldn't any more.

We pull up across from the Shaniko Hotel.

The secret Cuban Car Archive.

No more tunes for this fine old instrument, but we're allowed to see how wonderfully complex she really is.

Shaniko local.

Shaniko Hotel - what a beauty, and lovingly restored inside and out. But the door is locked and she's deserted - all we can do is peer in through the front doors.

Once I was the transporter for the Astoria Clowns - I racked up a colourful and happy parade history.

The barrista trailer - espresso just about everywhere. Unfortunately, this one was shuttered - possibly waiting for Halloween.

A typical snack bench along the Deschutes River.

Fishin' the Deschutes: the heroic fisherman regards his domain.

The heroic fisherman hauls his dipnet - and finds two huge salmon.

The heroic fisherman resets his net.

The heroic fisherman heads home with his catch.

Drat! progress halted by rogue tumblers. Stay back, they can attack at a moment's notice.

That's the top secret NASA Wildfire Laboratory on the horizon. To the uninitiated, it looks just like a farm.

Wildfire's top-secret observatory. The giveaway is it's entirely coated with a mixture of silver, selenium oxide and tin, designed to reflect alien mind-control beams, just like a standard tinfoil hat, but better.
