Day 34 - Alsea Bay, Cape Perpetua, Bayshore

Columbus Day weekend on Alsea Bay - it's all about the fishin'. And the crabbin'.

World Famous Devil's Churn. This is the safe visitor's vantage point at the top of the path.

The topiaries along the path. It's still safe here.

At the end of the path, the unsafe visitor's vantage point. The National Forest Service goes to some trouble to explain all the sources of unsafeness.

Beyond the end of the path, the ocean hurls thundering blasts of surf at anyone stupid enough to stand here.

Like us.

The view back at the safe visitors.

Wendy strikes the contemporary photographer's pose.

The tide also rises.

The wind battered trees take a walk down hill.

The fog rolls through the Cypresses.

Like a mirage, the lost city of Kolinar appears in the mist.

Stop faking me out, just throw it!

Allegedly, Hannah might have been here.

Emma Brown Sock enjoys a good game of stick, regardless of sea state, fog or wind.

Beach art, rearranged by tidal force.

How the Lord of the Flies winds up.

Eenie meenie minie - no Mo - except Mo's Chowder Houses which are everywhere on this coast.

Ecosystems stacked on ecosystems.

The path connecting back to Devil's Churn is like a wild yet manicured botanical garden.

Vibrant green grasses along the path.

A mysterious white rainbow appears over the Devil's Churn. White is Asia's mourning colour.

Visual phenomena are the norm today, a white rainbow arches over Devil's Churn. Pure magic.

The fog has returned, but this is "good fog" , yielding visual fascinations.

You may note today's photos are all about beauty and the magical mysterious world in which we humans find our place. It was an appropriate focus for a day that I learned that my good friend Debbie's sister passed away yesterday after a long struggle with cancer. She was only 48 years old. I didn't know Lauri, but through Debbie, an all too short encounter with her kind and gentle parents, and my knowledge of how close this family is, maybe I can also sense a little of what Lauri was about too. This page is for you Deb, all your family, and those who knew your sister. Our thoughts are with you all.
