Day 48 - Alabama Hills, Mount Whitney

The Sierra Nevada tower over Lone Pine.

Emma contemplates the day ahead - she's found her own shady spot.

Morning coffee on the rocks. With a promise to Tena that we did indeed take the cups away with us.

The hills have ears.

Today's morning coffee at the Alabama Hills, barely five minutes out of Lone Pine.

Emma enjoys a morning rub - in preparation for the walking that lies ahead.

Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the lower 48, commands the Owens Valley, home to the Alabama Hills.

A stealthy RV tries to stay hidden in the rocks. It's not working.

Hillbilly hillhoppin'. This sport was developed from the good ol' childhood pastime of running from rattlesnakes.

The World-Famous Mobius Arch makes much the same thrumming sound as the the UFO landing sites in Sedona. Emma can't figure out where the sound is coming from. Wendy is looking for the UFO.

Mobius from the far side.

These hills are a lot like African Shona style sculptures.

Not to be outdone by Sedona, the Hill's version (also World-Famous) of The Three Fingers of Homer.

Hmmmm - I'm thinking birds again.

Spot the heart.

Russ returns from a short scouting hike and proclaims that there is indeed another road into this back rock section. We were starting to think that this RV had some sort of hovering capability.

The Big League of Hillbilly Hillhoppin'.

Today's family portrait.

And Today's Mystery Poo.

Crazy rocks. Just how are they all held together?

The Shark meets the Mutant Ninja Turtle. No-one knows why.

By late afternoon the shadows come out to play.

Very late in the day, we decide to visit Mount Whitney. The summit trailhead is at 8360 feet, likely the high point of this year's tour.

The Eastern edge of the Sierras.

It's almost like a landscape architect had been here.

At the snowline, the World-Famous Accidental Japanese Garden.

The Formal Whitney. Everybody needs one.
