Ain't nuthin' like a picnic.
In September 2015, the Middletown area, north of Calistoga, was nearly burned to the ground in a giant wildfire. The worst-hit areas we found were to the west of the actual town, in small resort enclaves in the hills.
There really is nothing left. The cleanup is still incomplete after a year. We can still smell the fire.
The sign is the only thing that survived.
The landscape is spooky and barely passable.
Even foundations are hard to spot.
The actual town of Middletown is remarkably intact.
Further up the road, it's business as usual.
