Roadtrip 2021-2022 Winter: Seaside - Yachats - Brookings

Day 21 - Lone Ranch Beach, Redwoods Trail

Picnic line.

Of course, there is only one reason to come to the beach.

Lots of patchy fog today. Much cooler. The beach has many flavours.

Lone Ranch Beach has her own private sea witch - who closely guards all proceedings.

Flotsam of the day.

Marks left.

What path to take?

In the dead of winter, this perfect shady picnic site is more like the World-Famous Dismal Nitch.

There's a whole lot to parse here before embarking on the Redwoods trail.

The Redwoods Trail has many surprises, not least of which is this lowlands Pacific Rainforest.

Really didn't expect to find so much diversity and beauty - a mix of Redwoods and Coastal Rain Forest. Makes sense - we are in the transition zone.

The bridge at the top of the rainforest.

We stumble upon an incredibly rare Eagle-Eating Tree, which has evolved these enormous eagle-swatting branches for, well, swatting eagles. We've noticed the Americans don't like to talk about this.

The Expedition pauses to consider its next move.

Nature's hanging garden. Some work very hard to accomplish this in manufactured garden settings.

The orange vs green foliage was so striking. The orange however - is ferns that have passed. Amazingly new lush green ferns have already fully developed. Definitely not in my home garden right now!

Usually found only in the jungles of Borneo, and usually jealously guarded by cannibals, we find this full-grown cable vine here on the Redwood Trail. A principal export of Borneo, these cable vines are mainly used as arrestor cables on American aircraft carriers.

Trailside clover - very large. Russ thought they couldn't be clover - until he found a 2 leaf one. That's just darned lucky.

After a day of great discoveries - we head back to the digs for a full evening of food and fireplace.
