Day 5 - Boise to Ely

We're taking the outback route to Ely - avoiding the Interstate. That pond down there is actually the Snake River in its gorge.

An Oasis with a message.

The tiny town of Hollister sports a gas station, an outsize marquee for their elementary school, and that outhouse? Oops. That outhouse is actually City Hall. Really.

A cloud bird goes by.

The ranches are huge out here.

Wells has definitely seen better days - almost everything except the gas station is shut.

The latest in US Air Force experimentation with the weaponization of lenticular clouds. That "cloud" in the centre of frame just took off from the secret facility near Wells a few minutes ago. It climbs out really fast.

We found the control centre for them lenticular "clouds".

The "cloud" flies off silently to the west.

Our stop for the night. Ely Nevada. It's been at least 2 decades since we passed through here - and were hoping there may have been some significant progress. Turns out - not so much. Lots of shuttered buildings - definitely not lively. A bit of an uneasy feel. Our hotel room at the La Qunita was just fine - and that's where we locked ourselves in for the night. Good thing we brought our picnic dinner with us!!
