Day 8 - Farewell Bend trail

Farewell Bend was the original name proposed for "Bend" to US Mail when the community became large enough to desire mail services. US Mail deemed it too long - so the alternate proposal was simply "Bend" which was accepted. Never make anything too complicated for the mail service.

The forest floor is resplendent in cones.

These giant submarine pens were installed on the Deschutes River during the Cold War because the US military believed the Russians would never look here for submarines. The pens were never used, once it was discovered that no US submarine could safely submerge here. Too many kayaks.

This Control Valve is the central mind control valve for all Benders. Half a turn to the left turns everyone into beer-swilling, pizza-loving heathen... and half a turn to the right turns everyone into beer-swilling, pizza-loving heathen. It is not clear what leaving the whole thing alone does.

In a pandemic - or possibly post pandemic world - it sure seems that the rules and regs are more onerous just about everywhere. Not sure the authorities will get away with this generalized expansion for very long.
