Roadtrip 2024 Fall: Walla Walla - Eagle - Park City - Apple Valley - Sedona - St. George - Barstow - Paso Robles - St. Helena - Brookings - Newport - Seaside

Day 8 - Gooseberry Mesa: Windmill

We go for a snoop around Apple Valley. Many properties have views like this. Only a matter of time before suburbs arrive.

A revival of an old, old photography competition - first contested in Turkey, where it is affectionately called "FOTO PİLİÇ". The word "PİLİÇ" means "chicken". The rules are simple, and have operated without controversy for centuries. The entry with the most distinctly identifiable chickens is the winner. It is only in the 21st Century, with the advent of major prize money, has the definition of "distinctly identifiable" come into question. Judges have had to go into hiding after failing to count an obscure, but possibly visible chicken. It is thought that AI may bring a final justice to this ancient sport. In this picture, I thought there were several chickens, but now, it appears I only have one. Still, Russ 1, Wendy 0.

Exquisitly prepared for any scenario ahead.

The Team stamps off to the Windmill of Record.

Map like features present themselves on the side of an old concrete water holding tank.

The windmill's cistern.

The windmill's tail.

The scrubby landscape of Gooseberry Mesa.

Prickly. Stay clear!

Wendy tries to convince Ella there is a UFO over there. On the ground.

Looking towards Zion Park from atop the small cousin to the giant submarine rock in Sedona.

Shooting clouds.

The single windmill - for which the trail is named.

Last light indeed.

The alien landing fleet emerges through a window like hole in the space time continuum. They say they came for the sunset. Uh huh.

The last golden moments while the colourful show rages on above.
