At least we got the widow view.

At the Mission Creek Preserve, the old Wildfire Lab facility is now a "picnic area". That's it. Picnics.

This was the Landing Port that The Wildfire Lab built for First Contact, back in the 1920's. The Wildfire Lab somehow managed to infuriate the arriving Extraterrestrials so much that they returned with a vengeance, as documented in that shocking and chilling 1951 documentary, "The Day the Earth Stood Still".

The place still looks like an Extraterrestrial Landing Site.

Complete with some struggling strands of bougainvillea.

A single sentinel still stands guard.

Moonrise over fireplace.

Yup. Another Fake Rock. How many of these things were distributed by Klaatu? What are they for? What is the fate of humanity?

One of Wildfire Lab's leftover experiments: trees that grow 2x4's. It was thought a lot of waste and effort could be saved by getting trees to grow 2x4's directly. While the experiment was mildly successful, the longest 2x4 they were able to grow was only 27 inches long.

Once a dude ranch cabin.

Russ takes a rest under moonrise in one of the limited shady spots.

It's tough to survive out here.

At least for once they tell you what you CAN do.

Very different landscape at Whitewater Canyon Preserve - so many different types of flora.

Down the road at Whitewater Canyon, we almost immediately find these launchers, installed sometime after 1951, just in case Klaatu decided to come back yet again. This time we will be ready.

The dog is the only one who has noted our presence.

It's worth it to explore every little feature in this landscape.

The boulders. The mountains.

The bushes are startled by the nearby launchers. Their spiny tendrels stand on end, illuminated by the falling light.

This is a remnant of a missile fueling system, used to get the liquid-fuel powered missiles of 1960 gassed up for the point defence against Klaatu.

At Times raging waters have pushed around the boulders and the trees.

Branches everywhere.
