Roadtrip 2025 Spring: Richland - Bend - Waldport - Pacific City - Seaside

Day 26 - Seal Rock

It's not the lowest tide, but it's all we've got for this trip. The inner reef is partly accessible. We should find interesting things.

The Hatfield Institute's Algae Class in action. Really. It was very difficult to believe Hatfield has engineered these Sentient Algae. They look so human! They are so nice!

The outer reef is still underwater.

Algae class students hard at work - collecting - well - algae.

This stainless bolt was installed by the US Navy in 1943 to keep Oregon from sliding into the sea, just like California when The Big One Hits. It is not known why California has not installed one of these bolts.

There is lots more Navy stuff in the inner reef. We keep looking. The Algae class has moved up towards the good, slimy stuff.

Tidepools love the protected barrier of the Seal Rocks.

Anemone Garden

Seal Rocks has a little bit of just about everything you could ever want at a beach. Just go at low tide!

We have no good explanation for this orange snail. It does have a "USN" mark in tiny letters on it.

Light and water create an almost stained glass effect over this tidepool.

Don't forget the muscles! We are also here in fine form.

The US Navy's first two attempts at growing Mollusc Submarines. The one on the right actually grew pretty well, but it didn't have a hatch. The one on the left has a hatch, but was missing a door. They are still working on it.

End of they day. Seal Rock is once again calm, free of Algae, Russ, Wendy and Ella.
