Photographers might unsuccessfully search for many years looking for that most elusive of elements: distinction. It is never an easy task – and in our world of literally billions of photographers, it might be the most crucial and daunting task facing any rising photographer. So what makes a photographer distinctive? In this seminar-style presentation, we'll look at several historically useful routes to distinction and their application to you and your work.
Almost all of the conversation between typical photographers concerns objective, measurable things: the "rules" of composition; the technical specs; the trendiest techniques. Almost entirely missing from the conversation is the important stuff - it's like subjective content, context and communication takes care of itself. Part of the problem is photography is taught backwards – typical instruction is all about the objective stuff. Let's start changing the conversation. Let's work on vocabulary and ideas that elevate the subjective. This interactive workshop focuses on finding and learning to talk about the underlying subjective content of photographs – and why we should care.
