An access road through a farm on Salt Spring Island encourages exploration around the corner and down to the gate. Daffodils bloom along the roadside on a warm Spring day. Salt Spring Island, the largest in the southern gulf islands chain offers treasures to discover at every turn. On this particular visit to Salt Spring we were “on island” to celebrate the acquisition of a piece of property purchased by my mother in law Ling, who lives on the island. The property is affectionately known as “the swamp” – which indeed a good chunk of it actually is. The swamp, including beavers, rare succulent plants, and boasting a highly sensitive ecosystem, was acquired to keep it from being filled and developed. Way to go Mama Ling.
