Southern Spirit

- Wendy Kwan -

One cannot travel in the southern United States without feeling a connection to places of great spiritual significance. From tiny mountain top churches to the haunting serenity of natural landscapes and remnants of cultures past, the combination of place and special southern light both inspire and stir essential questions.

This current collection of photographs in an ongoing study, range in location from the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, to Wetumpka Alabama, and Savannah and Jekyll Island Georgia.

In 2007 our "Drive Across America" prompted the impetus and initial production for the Southern Spirit Collection.

Time has stealthily passed without my conscious attention to further photographs that clearly belong to Southern Spirit.  Now discovered, they take their place in the collection.

New additions were photographed in the states of New Mexico and Arizona, where I have spent much time over the past few years. Locations photographed in New Mexico include Galisteo, Nambe, Santuario de Chimayo, Pecos National Historic Site, and the Santa Lima Church. Sites in Arizona include Casa Grande, San Xavier, and Tumacacori.

These are places where land and spirit truly intertwine, a connection to those who have travelled before is deeply felt, and opportunity for serenity and reflection is abundant.
There will be more to come.
