Photographing the ephemeron involved a state of total immersion with this mysterious array of sand sculpted subjects. I came to see each area of the beach as it’s own uniquely identified sculptural area, then moved a little farther to find another and yet another. The possibility for interpretation seemed endless. Sometimes there were distinct references - at least in my mind! – to something quite specific – other times it was just about making sense of the unusual shapes and forms. For some viewers the Ephemeron are dream inspired figures, others see human musculature, paths and landscapes, and some dismiss them because they can’t figure out what they are – yet know they have to be “something” because they are photographs! Why can’t photography be a purely self-indulgent ride into abstraction?
