The folks that built Angkor Wat hadn't yet invented the arch, so they were limited n their stone building practices to pillar and plinth, and a modest A-frame extension of that model. Thus, the spans between columns is limited by the strength of the soft stone they were using, and we get these fabulous narrow passages to get lost in today.
