On temple grounds throughout Japan, special wishes or prayers can be inscribed on either paper or wooden plaques. The plaques are often purchased on the temple grounds, inscribed, then hung on boards of weathered wood before entering the temple. Wishes range from special prayers for returned health of a sick friend, to wishing yourself good luck on an upcoming exam! I discovered this beautiful example outside a temple in Kusatsu, Japan.
