give a little bit

Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary

Wendy Kwan and Russel Kwan

The Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary is an all-volunteer registered non-profit society whose purpose is to protect and enhance the quality of life for exotic birds. The main sanctuary is located in South Delta BC Canada, with additional support provided by a network of foster homes located across Vancouver’s lower mainland region. Greyhaven volunteers are directly involved in rescue, rehabilitation, sanctuary care, fostering, adoption, community education and fundraising to support the work. Russ and I provide a foster home for up to 2 Greyhaven birds at a time.

In “give a little bit”, our goal is to provide a deeper perspective into the human-avian bond and to show the comfort, confidence, and independence that birds can achieve when living in our world.

By removing the vivid colours that define exotic birds we exploit the abstract power of black and white photography to explore the unique relationships between birds and their guardians and to reveal that which lies beneath the sheer beauty of the species: their intelligence, and their complexity of character. It is this character that sets the stage for the development of meaningful relationships with people.

It is our deep belief in the work of Greyhaven that prompted the idea for this collection of photographs. Bird care is complex, bird behaviours can be demanding, and few in our community have the knowledge and skills required to properly care for and see to the long term needs of exotic birds. Greyhaven volunteers work tirelessly and quietly and Russ and I hope our photographs will help draw attention to the very important work they do, and why it is necessary.

We thank all the Greyhaven volunteers and fosterers who allowed us exclusive access to the sanctuary, their homes and birds to photograph this collection.

The resulting 20 exhibition photographs and rights to our limited edition book have been donated to Greyhaven for their exclusive use. All sales proceeds go directly to Greyhaven.
